Brief description: A Ukrainian vyshyvanka is a beautifully embroidered blouse that features intricate and colorful patterns. It is typically loose-fitting and is known for its ornate embroidery work, which often includes floral motifs, geometric patterns, and various other designs. Vyshyvankas are considered a symbol of Ukrainian heritage and culture and are worn on various occasions, including celebrations, holidays, and as everyday clothing.
Physical description: A “vyshyvanka” linen shirt is characterized by its cream color and features long, billowy sleeves. The shirt is adorned with intricate earth-toned embroidery, showcasing geometric patterns and motifs resembling wheat ears.
Materials and technique: Vyshyvankas are typically made from natural materials such as cotton or linen, which are cool and breathable. The embroidery is done by hand, and the techniques used can vary depending on the region and the artisan’s style. Common embroidery techniques include cross-stitch, satin stitch, and various other decorative stitching methods.
Collection/Exhibit name: Spring/Summer collection, “Vyshyvanka”
Personal Connection: I bought my “vyshyvanka” this summer when I went back to Ukraine for the first time after a year living in Canada. Nowadays, especially with the ongoing war back in my home country wearing a vyshyvanka became a symbolic and somewhat patriotic movement of proudness and freedom. My vyshyvanka is a modernized version of the original embroider shirt back in times. It became trendy, modern, casual, and a streetstyle garment to some extent, however, it did not lose its importance of cultural heritage of my country.
