From Grandma With Love

By: Spencer, Julia, Justin

The collection “From Grandma with Love” is an intimate exploration of familial heritage and personal triumphs. It reflects an intergenerational story written through three powerful clothing items that originated from different places around the world. The collection serves as a bridge between personal narratives and broader historical and cultural contexts. Most importantly all of the pieces were gifted to us by our grandmothers. This creates the connection between the basketball sneakers, the Levi’s jeans and the Fendi bag. Each piece in the collection acts as a chapter in a larger story, connecting individual experience to universal themes of resilience, heritage and success based on personal achievements. It invites viewers to experience the personal history as well as the emotional depth and historical significance these items bring with them. The collection seeks to celebrate the beauty in the ordinary and shows how individual pieces can create a collective which represents a broader cultural moment passed through generations.

After purchasing her very first pair of bell bottoms for a mere $10 when she was a teenager, my grandma stuck with the same pair throughout her late teens and early twenties. Not only was style all the rage, it represented the fashion trends of the era. For my grandma it also was the pants she favored for the festivals and concerts she went to.

I received this bag in 2016 from my mother. It originally belonged to my grandmother.  She needed through go through many hurdles in her life until she was able to finally  treat herself to something. For me, this bag is a pure sign of her persistence and  generosity.

I bought these shoes in the summer of 2016, right before starting my season with the under 15 Nova Scotia provincial basketball team. These sneakers have a connection to one of the highlights of my basketball playing career.
