Sentimental Accessories: Taking It Back To the 40s

By: Ana & Joan

The archival piece that I chose for this assignment is a historic jewelry set that was passed down from my great grandmother to my grandmother and then my mother. This object is a brooch (that can be converted into a necklace) and earrings set. It is made out of authentic turquoise stones with crystals which was crafted in the early 1940s. It is in the shape of flowers.

The square handbags in the 1940s were more than just accessories, they were also a reflection of resilience and resourcefulness of women during a pivotal period in history. To date these square handbags continue to mirror a broader narrative of women’s success and empowerment. When my mother bought this handbag it symbolized empowerment and success from where she started to the new job she was venturing into. Her passing it down to me was another way to show that, if she could be successful I could be too.

This black handbag with gold detailing presents a sleek and polished exterior crafted from high-quality leather. The smooth texture of the black leather exudes sophistication, while the gold detailing, including the zipper pulls, metal accents, and logo embellishments, adds a touch of opulence.
