Personal Connection: Grandfather’s money clip. Passed down after his passing.
The artifact I have chosen to archive is my grandfather’s money clip. This is an accessory that was worn for business formal events and casual outings. This was a business fashion staple. My grandfather was an executive and used this piece often. The money clip was a streamlined minimalistic look while also convenient and accessible for its useful purpose of holding bills. My grandfather was a clean, discrete, fashionable gentleman who appreciated quiet luxury pieces.
My Grandfather had purchased this money clip while living in the states in the 1940’s from the brand HICKOK – founded in 1909 and specialized in men’s jewelry and accessories which were mostly art deco and mid-century design. The clip is made from sterling silver with a gold overlay. My grandfather wore business suits, and/or business casual was his predominant attire paired with his fashionable money clips.
This piece along with other fashionable mid-century pieces were handed down to me after my grandfather’s passing along his jewelry box. The pieces are very meaningful to me and are generally priceless in my eyes. I don’t have many memories with my grandfather although having these staple pieces of his allows me to feel connected with him. I can tell him and I share similar traits as young men!
