Threads Through Heritage

Familial bonds and connections are so beautifully complicated. Our family and upbringing make us who we are. They gift us their past, aid us in the present and support our future, yet sometimes commutation can be difficult. Generational differences can become massive hurdles when trying to relate to one another, so we look for places where we can find similarities. Something we are all passionate about and find meaningful is fashion and through our love of fashion, we can connect with pieces from our family. Shoes no longer are just shoes, a dress is so much more, and a small money clip becomes monumental. These pieces become metaphors for the love and bond we share with our family and how despite any difference we can find a connection. Through this collection, we honour our family and the loving connection we have made with them with the assistance of fashion.

The personal connection I have with this item is that my grandmother and I are very close so I’m always eager to connect and learn more about her life. I’m always being told stories about her life and this garment is another step in her life that I’m yearning to further connect with.

Ever since I was little I looked up to my mom. She was a successful woman working in a male  dominated field and an amazing mom on top of that. I remember watching the movie The  Proposal with her when I was about 10 and there was a scene where Sandra Bullock’s  character is going down a ladder in classic open toed, Louboutin stilettos with the red bottom.  When my mom saw that scene she instantly knew she had to get a pair but she was adamant  that she had to buy the shoes for herself.

The artifact I have chosen to archive is my grandfather’s money clip. This is an accessory that was worn for business formal events and casual outings. This was a business fashion staple. My grandfather was an executive and used this piece often. The money clip was a streamlined minimalistic look while also convenient and accessible for its useful purpose of holding bills. My grandfather was a clean, discrete, fashionable gentleman who appreciated quiet luxury pieces.
